Abstract
Chronic diseases can result in early retirement due to reduced earnings capacity. The article uses anonymized longitudinal data from records of the German Pension Insurance, the „Insurance Accounts" Sample" (VSKT), to investigate this risk. The focus is on the impact of the stability of the whole working biography on early retirement due to poor health. Uninterrupted employment since early adulthood proves to be a protective factor for men and women alike and reduces the risk to a very low level. Unemployment, on the other hand, increases the risk considerably. Men are more unequal concerning early retirement due to reduced earnings capacity than women are. The risk for men is up to 45 % if more than five years of unemployment are recorded and 28 % for women with equal length of unemployment respectively.
