Abstract
The Interplay between Social Background and Strategies of Individual Agency in the Transition from School to Vocational Education
This paper explores how the interplay of social background and individual agency influences individual scopes of action in transitions from school to vocational education. A specific focus lies on young people's subjective assessment of social attributes and the actions they take as a consequence. The analysis of young people's adaptations and transformations of their family background is based on empirical results of qualitative interviews with young graduates from secondary schools. The results show that the individual assessments of family-related capitals show great variety and have a substantial influence on the room for maneuver of young people in the transition from school to vocational training.
