Abstract

Ältere Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund sind eine sehr heterogene Bevölkerungsgruppe, die sich u. a. hinsichtlich ihrer Herkunftsländer, ihrer Herkunftssprachen, ihrer Migrationsgeschichten und ihrer sozialen Lebenslagen stark unterscheidet. Mit dem kontinuierlichen demographischen Anstieg derjenigen Älteren, die biographisch über eine Migrationserfahrung verfügen, nimmt insofern auch die Pluralität innerhalb der älteren Bevölke-rung weiter zu. Diese Vielfalt bildet sich jedoch derzeit kaum in den Institutionen der Altenhilfe ab. Hier sind ältere Migrantinnen und Migranten unterrepräsentiert. Die Herausforderungen, die sich hieraus für Altenpolitik und Altenhilfe ergeben, stehen im Mittelpunkt des Beitrages. Es sollen Wege beleuchtet werden, wie bestehende Barrieren zwischen Angeboten der Altenhilfe und Älteren mit Migrationshintergrund überwunden und “differenzsensible“ Umgangsweisen entwickelt werden können.

Social Work with Elderly Migrants – Challenges and Perspectives for Elderly Care Institutions and Services

Elderly migrants form a very multi-faceted group. They vary markedly according to their original home countries, their first languages, their history of migration, and the social situation of individuals. The continuous demographic increase of elderly people who came from abroad contributes to the plurality within the group of older people. This plurality, however, is not adequately reflected in the institutions and services for the elderly. Thus, elderly migrants are severely underrepresented in elderly care organizations. The challenges that originate from this situation for political decision making and the help offered to the elderly are the central theme of this contribution. Ways to overcome the existing dissonances between the support structures and the needs of elderly migrants are discussed. The article provides recommendations as to how ‘sensitivity to difference’ can be developed to resolve problems in this area.
