Abstract

Retention Possibilities of Apprentices in the Training Firm. An Analysis with IAB Establishment Panel Data

The article considers the problems of young adults in the context of the retention of trainees completing vocational training programmes. Their difficulties are traced back to the firms' investment strategies, staff turnover, changing skill requirements, the increasing demand for skilled personnel as well as the institutions of collective bargaining and employee representation. Indicators of these determinants of firms' retention of trainees are examined as to their impact with a zero-inflated-negative binominal-regression model using data from the IAB-Establishment Panel 1998–2008. Among other factors, the importance of both the demand for skilled personnel and the institutions of collective bargaining for firms' retention of trainees completing vocational training programmes is confirmed.
