Abstract
Violence and Abuse Against Older People – an (Un-)important Topic? Empirical Results and Current State of Research in the Federal Republic of Germany
In Germany, within the research on violence and abuse, the main focus was, until the end of the 1980s, on children, adolescents and women. A detailed analysis and critical debate on violence and abuse against older people – within families and other contexts – can be traced back to the mid-1990s. It is remarkable that this latter debate has emphasised, in particular, violence in care settings. This article begins by providing an overview of definitions, current explanatory approaches and the present-day state of research in Germany. It then sets out the characteristics of violence and abuse against older people as well as current examples of prevention and intervention.
