Abstract
Veränderungen in der Altersstruktur der Bevölkerung haben erhebliche Auswirkungen auf die Finanzierung der deutschen Fiskalpolitik im Allgemeinen sowie der sozialen Sicherungssysteme im Besonderen. Vor allem die stetig steigende Lebenserwartung stellt eine Herausforderung für die Nachhaltigkeit der Staatsfinanzen dar. Der Beitrag untersucht dementsprechend die Entwicklung des demografischen Risikos auf Basis der Annahmen der koordinierten Bevölkerungsvorausberechnungen des Statistischen Bundesamts seit der Jahrtausendwende.
Changes in the age structure of the population have a major impact on public finances. In particular, low birth rates in the past and increasing life expectancy pose a rising challenge to the sustainability of state finances in Germany. We analyse demographic risk based on the varying assumptions of the Federal Statistical Office's coordinated population projections since the turn of the millennium. Our results show that the different assumptions can have drastic consequences for both the predicted age structure and the predicted total population.
