Abstract

Museen und ihr Personal waren bislang kaum Gegenstand sozialwissenschaftlicher Untersuchungen zur Kultur- und Kreativwirtschaft. Dabei handelt es sich um ein Berufsfeld, auf das die typischen Kennzeichen “kreativer Berufe“ zutreffen, wie etwa befristete und damit in erwerbsbiographischer Hinsicht unsichere Beschäftigungsverhältnisse, eine projektförmige Organisation der Arbeit sowie hohe Erwartungen an Selbstständigkeit und kreativen Ehrgeiz der Beschäftigten. Anhand empirischer Befunde eines explorativen Forschungsprojektes zum Berufsfeld Museum gibt der Artikel einen Einblick in die Arbeitsbedingungen und -prozesse, vor allem aber in ihre Interpretation und konkrete Bewältigung aus Sicht der Beschäftigten. Dabei wird deutlich, dass sich die Liebe zur Kunst in Form einer Liebe zur Arbeit äußert und somit nicht nur die raumzeitliche, sondern auch eine emotionale Trennung von Arbeit und Leben für das Museumspersonal kaum möglich ist.

Abstract

Up until now museums and their staff were hardly an object of sociological research as participants in cultural- and creative industries. It is an occupationalfield to which the typical label “creative industries” applies. The hallmarks of this kind of creative industry are for instance limited work contracts – which from a biographical work perspective translate to uncertain employment conditions –, an organization structured around project based work as well as a high level of autonomy and creative ambition excercised by the employees themselves. Referring to empirical results of an explorative research project on the occupationalfield of museums, the article delivers an insight into the terms of employment and working processes in museums, especially in reference to the interpretation and concrete coping strategies from the point of view of the employees. Although it becomes apparent that the love of art expresses itself in the love of work, for museum staff it is neither possible nor desirable to separate spatio-temporally as well as emotionally between work and life.
