Abstract

Die Spannung zwischen Beschreibung und Beschriebenem ist nicht nur in der Wissenschaftstheorie ein zentrales Motiv. Jede moderne Theoriesprache muss Stellung zu sich selbst beziehen. Dabei geht es auf metatheoretischer Ebene um die Art, wie die soziale Realität gefasst und beschrieben werden kann. Dieser Artikel untersucht die Verwendung von Metaphern in der Sozialtheorie Bruno Latours. Er stellt die These auf, dass der spezielle Gebrauch von Metaphern in Kombination mit Begriffen eine hybride Terminologie entstehen lässt. Diese bedingt eine reichere Perspektive auf soziale Phänomene und die Konditionen ihrer Beschreibung. Um eine solche Kombination resp. Konfiguration genauer untersuchen zu können, konzentriert sich der Artikel zunächst auf die Theorie(n) der Metapher und leuchtet diese hinsichtlich des Für und Wider ihrer Verwendung in (sozial-)wissenschaftlichen Diskursen aus. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird Latours Monographie “Reassembling the Social“ zum Gegenstand detaillierterer Analyse, in deren Rahmen die (dort weitesgehend noch unreflektierte) Benutzung von Metaphern zum Bestandteil des soziologischen Beschreibungsapparates wird. Eine Schlussfolgerung der Betrachtungen besteht im Vorschlag einer ‘symmetrischen‘ Handhabung von Metapher und Begriff, die erstere zum wirkmächtigen Element der Sozialtheorie machen könnte.

Abstract

This article examines the conceptual and non-conceptual tools used by a specific social theory to describe our social reality. It argues that the Actor-Network-Theory (ANT) uses the rhetoric figure of metaphor in combination with defined concepts in order to create a hybrid terminology. I will therefore show in some detail what ramifications follow from combining figural speech and concept and how this effects the ANT-architecture. Bringing concept and metaphor together on an operational level of description widens our scientific scope and enriches our perspective on social phenomena. Starting from the point of cognitive linguistics, the article discusses the peculiarities of metaphor and its problematic status in the scientific discourse. After some more general discussion of theories of metaphor, the text focuses on Bruno Latour's book “Reassembling the Social”. Latour's (rather unconscious) use of them might be a first step in making metaphor become a helpful element of the account of social practices. Taking the next step, it all boils down to the conclusion that contemporary social theory needs a new kind of symmetry between concept and metaphor in order to heighten its meta-theoretical self-awareness as well as to improve the usefulness of its theoretical tools.
