Abstract

Gleich der Welt insgesamt erschließt sich auch das soziale Leben den Menschen mittels Farben. Diese sind, kaum anders als Worte und Körpersprache, ein unverzichtliches Medium sozialer Kommunikation. Zugleich aber unterliegen sie gesellschaftlicher Einteilung, ja Normierung.

Im Verlauf der Geschichte haben sich beim sozialen Umgang mit Farben spezifische Traditionen und Konventionen entwickelt. Die koloristischen Regelsysteme der Interaktion zwischen Individuen und Gruppen hängen aufs Engste mit dem Wechselverhältnis gesellschaftlicher Formationen, von Klassen, Schichten, Institutionen zusammen. Diese Relationen wiederum unterliegen dem Wandel, sodass auch die Farben schon früh in den Sog politischer, wirtschaftlicher, zivilisatorischer Machtkämpfe gerieten.

Wie sich solche sozio-chromatischen Auseinandersetzungen vollzogen und welche Veränderungen sich dabei ereigneten, wird im vorliegenden Text mithilfe literarischer Zeugnisse, an historischen Beispielen sowie in systematischer und aktueller Hinsicht geschildert.

Abstract

Like the world as a whole, social life has revealed itself to people through colors. Colors are no different from words and body language; they are an essential medium of social communication. Concurrently, they are subject to societal scaling. Throughout the course of history, specific traditions and conventions have developed in the social usage of colors. The coloristic regulation systems of the interactions between individuals and groups are strongly related to the interdependencies of societal formations of classes, stratifications and institutions. These relationships have again succumbed to change. Colors have become involved early on in the maelstrom of political, economic and cultural power struggles. How such socio-chromatic arguments are performed and which changes have occurred is discussed in this article via literary testimonials and historical examples.
