Abstract

“In der Vergangenheit liegt die Zukunft“ oder “Nur wer seine Vergangenheit kennt, kann seine Zukunft gestalten“ – so wird das adinkra-Symbol sankɔfa häufig gedeutet. Ursprünglich im Kontext der Akan-chieftaincy verankert, hat es mittlerweile eine Popularität erlangt, die weit über den lokalen Kontext hinausweist. Sankɔfa gilt als Schlüsselreferenz für einen positiven Vergangenheits- und Traditionsbezug und wird folglich nicht nur ästhetisch, sondern auch politisch angeeignet – sowohl im nationalen als auch zunehmend im afro-diasporischen Rahmen. Zugleich verweist das Symbol vor allem im diasporischen Kontext auf die komplexe Geschichte der Sklaverei – und die damit verbundene Frage nach schwarzer Identität und Zughörigkeit.

Dieser vielseitigen Aneignung in politischen, religiösen, kulturellen und konsumorientierten Zusammenhängen geht der Beitrag nach. Wie werden hier jeweils Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft ins Verhältnis gesetzt und welches Geschichtsbild verbindet sich mit den unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen über nationale bzw. schwarze Identität? Diese Fragen werden u. a. anhand des Films “Sankofa“ von Haile Gerima sowie der ghanaischen Kultur- und Tourismuspolitik der letzten 20 Jahre erläutert.

Summary

“The future lies in the past” or “You need to know your past in order to move forward” – this is how the adinkra-symbol sankɔfa is often interpreted. Originally closely linked to Akan-chieftaincy, the symbol is nowadays popularized far beyond its local context. Sankɔfa has become a key reference for a positive interpretation of the past and an appreciation of tradition and it is consequently appropriated aesthetically as well as politically – both in a national as well as increasingly in an African-diasporic context. However, in diasporic understandings, sankɔfa refers to yet another past, namely, to the complex history of slavery, which is connected to the question of black identity and belonging.

The article traces these diverse appropriations in political, religious, cultural and consumption-oriented spheres. It asks about the specific connections that are drawn between past, present and future and seeks to understand the various notions of history and historical consciousness that go along with different understandings of national as well as black identity. These questions are discussed with reference to Haile Gerima's film “Sankofa” as well as to recent developments in Ghanaian cultural politics and tourism.
