Abstract

Im Mittelpunkt dieses Artikels steht eine populationsgenetische Stichprobe im südafrikanischen Simon’s Town, die im Rahmen des globalen Genographic Project erhoben wurde. Simon’s Town war während der Apartheid besonders stark von Zwangsumsiedlungen der nicht-weißen Bevölkerung betroffen. Nach 1994 fanden sich einige der ehemaligen BewohnerInnen zum Project Phoenix zusammen, um an das Leben im Ort und die Gewalterfahrung der Vertreibungen zu erinnern. Der genetische Abstammungstest, der in Zusammenarbeit mit dem lokalen Museum organisiert wurde, schloss rhetorisch an das Narrativ von Herkunft, Zugehörigkeit und Diversität an, das auch prägend für die Erinnerungspolitik des Phönix-Projekts war. Darüber hinaus repräsentierten die VeranstalterInnen die Studie (und deren Ergebnisse) als Illustration einer “post-racial society“, im Sinne des Slogans der Einheit in der Vielfalt. In meinem Beitrag zeichne ich die zugrundeliegende Identifikationspraktik nach und zeige auf, wie hier die Klassifikationslogik der Apartheid sowohl unterwandert als auch reproduziert wurde.

Like a Phoenix from the Ashes: Classification, Population Genomics and the Politics of Memory in South Africa

Abstract

This article discusses a DNA-ancestry testing that was conducted in the South African community of Simon’s Town as part of the global Genographic Project. Simon’s Town, a small fishing town and military harbor has had a long migration history. During apartheid, all non-white residents were forcibly removed from their homes and allocated to segregated townships elsewhere. After 1994, some of the former residents got together and founded “Project Phoenix” in order to commemorate their former lives and the violent experience of the forced removals. The genetic testing, which was organized in conjunction with the local museum, built strongly on the rhetoric of origins, belonging and diversity that was also central to Project Phoenix. In addition, the investigation and its results were presented as an illustration of the “post-racial society” founded on a sense of unity in diversity. My contribution discusses the practices of identification the sampling for the genetic testing entailed. I demonstrate how the classificatory logic of Apartheid was at the same time undermined and reaffirmed in the process.
