Abstract

In diesem Beitrag wird der struktursoziologische Ansatz als alternatives Forschungskonzept für die empirische Kultursoziologie vorgestellt. Kulturtheoretische Implikationen sind die historisch überdauernde Nichtexistenz der sozialen Distinktion oberer Klassen zum populären Geschmack und die soziale Reproduktion kultureller Praktiken unter Berücksichtigung sozialstruktureller Veränderungsprozesse in postmodernen Gesellschaften. Betrachtungsgegen-stand ist die Populärkultur Fußball, die sich aufgrund der Kennzeichnung als Proletariersport in der Vergangenheit sowie ihrer gegenwärtigen klassenübergreifenden Beliebtheit in besonderer Weise als Analysefeld kultursoziologischer Gegenwartstheorien und der dort begründeten mutmaßlichen Grenzüberschreitung zwischen hochkulturellem und populären Geschmack im Zuge umgreifender kultureller Wandlungsprozesse in postmodernen Gesellschaften eignet. Folglich kann aufgezeigt werden, dass der struktursoziologische Ansatz fruchtbare Erkenntnisse für die empirische Kultursoziologie generell verspricht.

Abstract

This article presents an alternative approach to the empirical sociology of culture (henceforth called ‘structural-sociological approach’). Theoretical implications are the historical non-existence of social distinction, which typified the exposure of higher social classes to popular cultures, and the social reproduction of cultural practices in consideration of social-structural changes in postmodern societies. Issue for analysis is the identified social shift in football, which can be seen as a typical popular culture. Hence, football is very suitable for analyzing the border-crossing between popular and high culture in postmodern societies as identified in broader theories of cultural change due to the notion of working class football in the past and football’s current popularity in middle and upper classes. It is illustrated that the application of the structural-sociological approach could provide consolidated findings to the empirical sociology of culture in general.
