Abstract

Using data taken from the German lncome and Expenditure Survey (Einkommens- und Verbrauchsstichprobe) 1993, we estimate the income elasticity of the demand for health services. Separate equations are estimated for the two subsamples of privately and publicly insured persons. lt is seen that the income elasticity of demand is greater than one for low- and medium-income households. Only the top income earners exhibit an elasticity less than one.
