Abstract

The paper analyses the role of firm entry and exit for market processes and the development of employment. Based upon annual establishment micro data from German Official Statistics for the manufacturing sector and the two decades from 1980 to 1999 the following questions are exarnined: What is the relative importance of firm entry and exit for job reallocation, job creation and job destruction? How do entry and exit rates behave within the business cycle? Are there any typical pattems of entry and exit between industries? Which insights can be gained with respect to the survivability of new firms? Tue analyses become possible by combining annual firm micro data from German Official Statistics and thereby creating an establishment panel which allows to follow the development of firms on the micro level.
