Abstract
This paper shows that economics journals differ significantly in their price-quality-ratio. These diffferences can partly be explained by the journals' different commercial orientation. Non-commercial and university press journals have a better price-quality-ratio than commercial ones. Moreover, some single publishers have a negative effect, which may be an indicator of their market power. German journals exhibit a comparatively good price-quality-ratio, at least in the eyes of German-speaking economists. This may be due to the fact that these journals are internationally less relevant which constrains publishers in their pricing policies. In addition, German publishers have less freedom to price-discriminate than foreign competitors.
