Abstract
In this survey we give an overview of the competing approaches to modeling allocation and distribution decisions within a household. The theory of the New Home Economics and its critical discussion within the marxist-feminist theory, the Institutional Economics and neoclassical bargaining models are presented with regard to their contributions to explaining the gender-specific division of labor in the household. We consider whether the concept of gender analysis is applicable within the scope of these approaches. The most appropriate analytic framework for analyzing intra-household decision making is provided by the combined Institutional Bargaining Framework, which takes into account socially determined gender differences.
