Abstract
Activities in the so called „informal sector" are increasingly discussed as substitutes for gainful employment and as means of protection of the natural environment. A discussion about the future of work in the „informal sector", however, is particularly complicated because „informal work" is not a well defined concept. There is much disagreement about criteria that allow to an activity to classified as belonging to the informal or the formal sector.
To overcome the wide variety of definitions, seven criteria are proposed, which clearly describe and differentiate various kinds of work with regard to their degree of formalisation within a given institutional context. By means of these criteria a new classification scheme is developed that allows precise distinctions between every kind of work within the „informal Sector" in Germany.
