Abstract

Cliometrics is an interdisciplinary approach to analysing the historical development of economies of the past. It combines elements of historical analysis with modern economic theory and econometrics in order to bring about a deeper understanding of economic processes. The approach has gained limited popularity in Central Europe, in contrast to the Anglo-Saxon countries, despite the fact that the dominance of the „Historical School" of economics at the turn of the century should have made Germany a fertile soil for this kind of economic history. The collection of contributions discussed in this review article presents a sampling of the cliometric tradition, and shows its widespread applicability.
