Abstract
Along with research, a major task of university departments is the postgradual education of young scientists. This paper takes the view that departments „produce" doctor and habilitation degrees, which serve as inputs to the attainment of professorships. We study the productivity of economics departments in Germany, Austria and Switzerland with respect to the „making" of economics professors. Although some of the top ten in research productivity are also included in the top ten of the postgradual education productivities the correlation is rather weak. From this we conclude that research productivity should not be taken as the sole indicator of productivity.
