Abstract
There has been an increasing number of approaches to design indicators of sustainable development. However, the lacking theoretical basis of these approaches has been criticized. This paper contributes to the overcoming of this deficiency. Within an economic model, the theoretical structure of an indicator of sustainable development is described. Economic, ecological and social aspects of sustainable development are taken into consideration. The implications of ,critical levels' of natural resource stocks are analyzed.
