Abstract

East German birth rates decreased dramatically after German unification. Using neoclassical population economics the first part of this paper analyzes the expected impact on birth rates of the different incentive structures before and after unification. Aggregate data on birth rates for different age groups as well as micro data of the German Socio-economic Panel is then used to try to judge the importance of the competing theoretical explanation. Almost all the evidence suggests that the drop in birth rates should be interpreted as being part of an adjustment process leading to West German fertility profiles that are characterized by comparatively late births.
