Abstract

This paper aims to identify characteristics of occupations and occupational mechanisms, and to test them empirically applied to the example of occupational mobility on the German labor market. Using data of the Sample of Integrated Labour Market Biographies (SIAB) of the Institute for Employment Research, it is shown that occupations with standardized vocational training programs tend to trigger longer durations, i.e. a lower propensity of occupational mobility in the first jobs on the labor market. Occupational closure and occupation-specific human capital also reduce the propensity of mobility between different jobs. The analyses support the view that occupations still have a quite strong impact on allocation processes on the German labor market.
