Abstract

The present paper analyzes the explanatory and practical value of the theory of self-organizing systems as a basic concept of management studies. To this end, the paper analyzes to what degree the basic assumptions of the theory of self-organizing systems correspond with the context of economical institutions and their management systems. Then, three applications of the theory of self-organizing systems in the field of management science are presented, discussed, and compared. Finally, major problems associated with an application of the theory of self-organizing systems in management research are identified. These problems have to be solved before the theory of self-organizing systems can serve as a general framework of management research.
