Abstract

,Talk is not cheap'. Experimental evidence indicates that communication increases cooperation in a public good type setting (prisoner's dilemma) and helps to overcome redistribution problems (dictator game). Communication has two effects: Talk makes others' behaviour more predictable and facilitates coordination on collectively beneficial moves. Identification, i.e. non-verbal communication, activates general norms of cooperation and fairness. It increases cooperation in the prisoner's dilemma and suffices to induce allocators to converge to the norm of equal division in the dictator game. Communication does not affect the ultimatum game as external monetary incentives crowd out internal motivations and social norms.
