Abstract
In order to simulate the effects of a rising price level on the decreasing tax returns during the German inflation of 1920/23, we use a small econometric model where total tax returns as well as separate returns for the wage tax, tax on assessed income, turnover tax and the Reichsnotopfer (a capital levy) depend on inflation. In each case, the elasticity of the tax returns with respect to inflation is markedly negative. However, the subsequent simulations replicate the reinforcing effects of the monetized deficit in the public budget only for parts of the investigation period.
