Abstract
The estimation results based on a bivariate probit model to explain occupational change following apprenticeship training as well as the relationship of occupational change and the labour market status (employment and non-employment) of youth on the basis of a recent questionaire for Austria show that past labour market experience has a strong effect on the probability of occupational change. It is particularly high for those respondents with frequent job turnover and/or multiple spells of unemployment. Past unemployment experience is also an important cause for future unemployment and (temporary) withdrawal from the labour force. However, the results of this paper do not indicate that occupational change is an important determinant for future employment status.
