Abstract
Based on a selection of university graduates who were looking for a job after having passed their examination between 1975 and 1985, some determinants of job search duration and first income are analyzed. By applying statistical methods of survival analysis it can be shown that employment chances decrease with length of unemployment. This result is at odds with those models of neo-classical job search theory postulating a constant rate of offers and conditions which imply a constant or declining reservation wage. Relative deprivation of certain groups becomes apparent above all in longer duration of unemployment but much less in a lower first income.
