Abstract
The theory of compensating wage differentials postulates that, other things equal, wages will be higher in unpleasant or dangerous jobs. This hypothesis is tested for the FRG by estimating earnings functions based on five different sets of data for male full-time employees. Contrary to a number of studies using data mainly from the US we conclude that workers in the FRG seem neither to be compensated for risks of industrial accidents nor for risks of occupational diseases.
