Abstract

This paper investigates to what extent supply shocks in the seventies affected the non-accelerating inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU). The findings are that in the FRG for 1974-1981 a no-shock NAIRU amounts to 4.5 percent approximately where a 3 percent tolerable inflation rate is assumed. This value is considerably higher than in the sixties mainly due to a productivity slowdown. This result raises further questions about the causes of this slowdown such as the role of a changing vintage structure of the German capital stock
