Abstract

The pressures from developing countries towards a new economic order aiming at a global redistribution of income present a serious challenge for the enterprise of today. Strategic vulnerability in strategic planning has to be reduced. Even if one assumes rather dramatic actions of the raw material producing countries growth and relatively high employment can be maintained in the Federal Republic until 1987, if a consistent policy of reducing specific raw material consumption and1 of structural change in the economy is followed. Under the assumptions made, export-oriented companies with products having a high value-added content do not have to consider a basic change of their market situation. If, however, companies have production facilities in Germany, and if they depend to a large extent on raw materials it seems advisable to diversify the plant locations internationally in order to avoid potential supply shortages.
