Abstract
Abortion as a vehicle of political, scientific and economic interests
The ethical evaluation of abortion is subject to constant change. While abortion was morally accepted in antiquity, the restrictive regulations of modern age, at least in the western world, are based on the Christian perspective that life is worth to be protected from the beginning. Since the end of the 20th century, the view that abortion should be a human right has become more and more obvious. The increasingly libertarian approach to the topic also favours the breaking of existing taboos in other areas relevant to medical ethics: abortion seems to be a vehicle for political, economic and scientific interests. This includes not only directly related aspects such as the utilization of fetal cells, but also apparently more distant issues such as population control or euthanasia.
