Abstract

Use of LAWS. A Peace Ethics Assessment from a Christian Perspective

There will be wars in the future as well. Answers are needed to the question of the justified use of warlike force as self-defense (ius ad bellum). But we also need ethical answers to the question of appropriate weapon systems for such defense (ius in bello). So-called Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS) promise here with the welfare argument the sparing of own armed forces and a reduced destructive effect. According to other arguments, such systems should be outlawed on principle. Reflective peace-ethical consideration of the use of autonomous weapon systems always asks about the consequences for the image of man, dignity and coexistence. Such arguments are compiled here with regard to the use of LAWS. It is then asked how Christian ethics can position itself in this discussion and whether it can also make a substantial contribution of its own. Prof. Dr. Manfred Spieker has been an authoritative thought leader in Christian peace ethics until recent times. I am very pleased to be able to honor his outstanding achievements also in this field of Christian social ethics on the occasion of his 80th birthday with this modest contribution.
