Abstract

Private schools between autonomy and state control

More and more pupils attend private schools. Due to social changes in Germany private persons not only conduct traditional types of schools but also more single learning opportunities within public full-time schools and in early childhood. One further type of private engagement in education is homeschooling. The article “Private schools between autonomy and state control” deals with the question how to interpret the term “school” and questions the conventional classification of private schools into Ersatzschulen and Ergänzungsschulen. Furthermore, the legitimacy the recognition of schools will be questioned.
