Abstract
Between East and West German plants there are still large differences in export behaviour in spite of the continuous adjustment process. Based on the IAB establishment register from 2001 to 2010, this paper investigates which plant characteristics determine the decision to export and the export shares in East and West Germany as well as the reasons for the differences in export performance of the two regions. For this we apply logit and fractional logit models and decompose the estimation results. The results highlight human and physical capital, innovations, plant size, ownership structure, plant organisation and industry affiliation as major determinants. However, they explain at most 60 per cent of the observed differences. Over time, increasingly other determinants than those under consideration seem to be responsible for the adjustment process between East and West Germany.
