Abstract
Caritas und Diakonie, die beiden großen konfessionellen Wohlfahrtsverbände und ihre Einrichtungen, sind Teil eines doppelten deutschen Sonderwegs: einerseits der privilegierten Staat-Kirche Beziehungen und andererseits des wohlfahrtsverbandlichen Korporatismus. Die konfessionellen Akteure sind sowohl durch Säkularisierung wie auch durch die Vermarktlichung sozialer Dienstleistungen unter Druck geraten. In der Debatte darüber, ob die Verbände darauf nur instrumentell reagiert haben oder ob sie auch eigene pfadabhängige Antworten geben, wird in diesem Beitrag die These vertreten, dass die konfessionellen Verbände auch spezifische Akzente (bspw. durch den Befähigungsansatz) setzen, mit denen die eigene Identität weiter entwickelt wird.
Denominational Charities Under Pressure – Continuation of the German Special Role?
Caritas and Diakonie, the two major denominational charities and their institutions, play a special role in Germany in two ways: On the one hand, as a part of the privileged state-church relations and, on the other, as a part of welfare-friendly corporatism. The denominational actors have come under pressure both through secularization and the marketization of social services. In the debate about whether the associations responded to it only instrumentally or whether they also come up with their own strategy, this article argues that the confessional associations set their own specific accents (for example, through the empowerment approach) with which their own identity could be developed.
